Baitcasters are the original and more conventional reels for serious anglers. With so much out there, it can be easy to get overwhelmed with what is the best baitcaster for the money.
Have you ever heard the phrase “you get what you pay for?” Well that's not entirely true in my book. Instead of listing all the great baitcasters on the market I think it's best to list some affordable options along with a couple high-end models for comparison purposes.
The best bait casting reels can handle heavier line, and can generally cast longer distances than their spinning counterparts. Why is that important? A longer cast will allow you to get out beyond the surf if you're fishing from the beach, and if you are casting from a river bank, access to the deeper pools or well known spots can increase your chances of landing an awesome catch. That's going to leave you with plenty of bragging rights come the end of the day.
The question of baitcaster vs spinning reel is a mute point in my opinion. One is not better than the other as they both serve a purpose. Start off with a spinner and learn to use that. If you find yourself enjoying your time on the water, then move on up to a baitcasting reel when you are ready.

Best Baitcaster Reel for 2021
When it comes to finding the best baitcaster for the money in 2021, I found a lot of junk out there. Don’t waste your money on low quality fishing equipment. There is plenty out there and it will leave you feeling frustrated. Lots of backlash, jammed lines, poor casting and so on. You want to enjoy the precious time you have on the water.
If you invest wisely, and that doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune, you can bag yourself a great baitcaster which should then help you bag that beast of a catch you have always dreamed of.
Here are my top 3 picks for the best baitcasters in 2021:
1. Pflueger President XT Low Profile Reel
The Pflueger President XT Low Profile Reel is one of the best baitcasters for the money. Not only is it a quality unit, but it will last you a good few years of casting enjoyment due to its durability. Considering the quality, it’s very affordable. At less than the cost of a meal out, your other half will be hard pushed to complain when you buy one.
What makes it even better is the fact it is suited to both fresh and saltwater environments. In theory, you can get away with just one reel for longer trips where you might be taking in both environments. Alternatively, this would make a great spare reel to take with you on trips.
The Pfluger President XT is made with aircraft grade aluminum, giving it the aforementioned strength. It has 9 corrosion resistant stainless steel ball bearings, so casting is super smooth. This magnetic braking system also assists with smooth casting which can greatly assist the avoidance of the snake’s mess in your reel; AKA the Backlash!. The soft touch rubber knob creates a comfortable grip, even on longer fishing days so no more blisters.
Pflueger President XT Low Profile Specs:
- Gear Ratio: 7.3:1
- Line Capacity (lb/yds): 145/12, 125/14 (Mono)

The reel frame and side plates are made of a strong and lightweight alluminium. 10 stainless steel bearings that allow fast and smooth line retrieval – reducing time with knotted spools.
The carbon fiber drag is really cool. It applies up to 15 pounds of pressure but still feels smooth.
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur should be seen as an investment. With these obvious benefits it is hard to discount. It's one of the best medium duty reels on the market. That's why I could not leave it off my list of the best baitcasters this year.

This fishing reel is a low profile type, with C6 carbon sideplates on the sides. This makes it lighter weight so more comfortable on longer days. Even though it’s light weight, the Abu Garcia Revo SX is robust and built to last.
This baitcaster has 9 ball bearings that are made of stainless steel, and one roller bearing. The ball bearings help the crank go smoothly when you reel in. It has a DuraGear gear mechanism made of strong brass. With a bit of care this will last you many years and hopefully plenty of good memories.
The Abu Garcia Revo SX reel also has a strong drag system. There's nothing more frustrating than luring on a big catch just to loose it due to a faulty reel. The DuraClutch design makes this reel easy to hold. It stays comfortable even after a long day on the water.

Farthest Casting Baitcaster

Does the casting distance even matter? Hell YES!!
But why…?
Put simply, the further you cast, the less tension you're gonna have on your line…
And…? Less tension means less chance of the line breaking.
Result: fewer lost catches. That's why it's SOOOO IMPORTANT!
bNow, let's be clear. When it comes to reel vs rod, the rod is the most important part of the equation. All things being equal, a 7 foot rod will trump a 6 foot rod. Just like in the NBA, are you going to pick a 6foot center or a 7 foot center…..you do the math!
But, as this is a Baitcasting article, let's focus on the reels. There are some that will give you a few more get for your buck and that can make all the difference when it comes to snagging the most fish!
SHIMANO Core Baitcast Reel
A friend of mine has the Core 100MG and loves it:
“It's the favourite reel I own. It's Light, versatile, tough, powerful, fits perfectly in my hand and casts a country mile. Like anything else, it's user dependent – for example, some people hate that you need to crack it open to adjust the braking system. I have a bunch of other good reels and, for me, they don't compare to the Core”
It can feel a little strange when you first start casting with it. It almost feels like it is a loose cast. But when you get this batboy dialled in you'll cast far and with more accuracy.
What's not to love about that!!
SHIMANO Core Baitcast Reel Specs:
- Gear Ratio: 6.2:1
- Line Retrieve: 26 in
- Weight: 5.4oz
- Bearings: 8+1
- Max Drag: 11 lbs

Best Anti-Backlash Baitcast Reel 2021

When you start baitcasting, either as a beginner or switching over from spinning reels, you're gonna get acquainted with something very quickly.
And IT'S GONNA BE A PAIN IN THE ASS!!
What is it I hear you say….?
The good old BIRD”S NEST!
Sure as shit, backlash has the ability to ruin your day on the water, and unless you know how to overcome it, or have a good reel, you may as well pack up and go home.
So how do I stop it happening?
Well there are a few ways, but I'll tell you what my go-to method is.
Well the first thing you need to do is loosen off your drag so there's some play in there, but not too much.
Now this will give you a little more room for error while still maintaining good quality casting. I have found that when I've had backlash on my line it has always been because drag was not suited to the lure I was using.
That, and of course good old fashioned practice.
But if you do want to cut down on wasted time, here are my recommendations for the best anti-backlash baitcast reels in 2021.
1. Abu Garcia Black Max X Low Profile Baitcast Reel

Abu Garcia Black Max X Low Profile Baitcast Reel Specs:
- Max Drag: 15 lbs
- Gear Ratio: 6.4:1.
- Weight: 10.2 oz.
- Line Retrieve: 25″

Final Thoughts

It's been a long read, but don't worry. I've shown you what to look for when buying a bait caster reel and rod combo. The best reels are Abu Garcia, Shimano, Lew's and Daiwa which have different features that will help them work better in certain situations.
There is no one “best” fishing gear company because it really depends on your needs so buy the right equipment for where you want to go with this sport!
Backlash impacts all of us fishermen even though we try our hardest not too let it get to us- there are some companies who do make backlashing less by adding more bearings or reducing weight from the spool shafts etc.
Just be sure to read the reviews, watch some videos but, above all else, don't overthink it.
The main thing is to try your next baitcaster reel and learn from the experience, good or bad.
Remember, a bad day on the water will always beat a good day in the office!
